Alerts: let price come to you

Set an alarm at your level and walk away, so you trade your plan instead of staring at the screen.

In one line

What if the chart could tap you on the shoulder only when price reaches your level?

Explained simply

An alert is like an oven timer. You don't stand staring at the oven; you set the timer and do something else until it rings. When it rings, you check the food before taking it out, just like you check your plan before trading.

The lesson

An alert notifies you when price reaches a level or when a condition is met, such as a candle closing above resistance or RSI crossing back above 30. RSI, the Relative Strength Index, is a gauge from 0 to 100 that compares recent up moves with recent down moves. Alerts help you wait for your setup instead of chasing moves out of boredom. An alert is a reminder to check your plan, not an automatic reason to trade.

A worked example

Illustrative example: your plan looks for a long trade at support of 1,500 on the daily chart, but only after a daily close back above 1,500. Price is 1,560 now. You set a price alert at 1,510 to wake you up, and a close alert at 1,500 for the trigger. The alert sits 1,560 - 1,510 = 50 points away. With an ATR (the average size of recent daily candles) of 25 points, that is about 50 / 25 = 2 average days of movement, so there is no reason to stare at the screen.

The same idea at four levels

  1. Beginner. An alert is an alarm that tells you when price reaches a level you chose.
  2. Foundation. Set alerts at your planned levels so you do not have to watch the screen all day.
  3. Intermediate. Pick the right type: price cross, candle close beyond a level, indicator condition, or a reminder before scheduled news.
  4. Advanced. A close-based alert waits for the candle to finish beyond the level, so it ignores quick pokes that close back inside, while a price-cross alert fires on the first touch.
  5. Expert. Keep only a few alerts, each tied to a written plan, delete stale ones every week, and when one fires, run your checklist before any order.

Mistakes to avoid

Check yourself

What is a price alert?

An alarm when price reaches a level you chose. It only tells you; it does not trade.

Your alert rings. What do you do first?

Open your plan and run the checklist. The alert is a reminder to check the plan.

Which alert waits for the candle to finish beyond a level?

A candle-close alert. It checks the close, not the first touch.

How do alerts help against chasing?

You wait for your level instead of watching and getting bored. Less screen time means fewer bored, impulsive trades.

What does RSI measure?

Recent up moves against down moves, on a 0 to 100 scale. RSI is a momentum gauge built from price.

Goal of this lesson: Set price and indicator alerts so you act at planned levels instead of watching screens all day.
