AI-assisted journaling
Write down every trade, then let the AI help you find the habits hiding in your notes.
In one line
Your last 20 trades hide a habit you have not noticed. Could an AI summary spot it in seconds?
Explained simply
A trading journal is like a diary for your trades. If you write honestly, an AI can read it like a detective and say, 'You lose more on news days.' But a detective can only find clues you actually wrote down.
The lesson
A journal records each trade's setup, entry, stop, exit, result in R (the result measured in units of what you risked) and your reason and feelings. An AI assistant can tag trades, summarize a week and point out patterns, such as losses clustering after two wins or on news days. It can only find what you record honestly, and every pattern it claims must be checked against the numbers. Remove account numbers, names and other personal details before pasting a journal into any AI tool.
A worked example
Illustrative example: ten trades, four of them on news days. The AI summary says 'you lose more on news days'. You check. News-day results were -1R, -1R, -1R and +2R, a total of -1 - 1 - 1 + 2 = -1R, or -1 / 4 = -0.25R per trade. The other six were +2R, -1R, +2R, -1R, +2R and -1R, a total of 2 - 1 + 2 - 1 + 2 - 1 = 3R, or 3 / 6 = 0.5R per trade. The AI was right this time, but only 4 news-day trades is a hint to watch, not proof.
The same idea at four levels
- Beginner. A trading journal is a record of every trade you take.
- Foundation. Record the setup, entry, stop, exit, result in R, your reason and one emotion tag.
- Intermediate. Ask the AI to group trades by setup, day or emotion tag and to show the total R for each group.
- Advanced. Check each pattern the AI finds with a quick count, because it can miscount or invent a neat-sounding pattern, and treat patterns from a handful of trades as hints, not proof.
- Expert. Strip personal data before sharing, keep your raw journal as the source of truth, and turn only well-checked patterns into one rule change at a time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Journaling only the winning trades.
- Pasting account numbers or personal details into an AI tool along with the journal.
- Believing a habit the AI names without counting the trades yourself.
Check yourself
What is a trading journal?
A record of every trade you take. It remembers every trade so you can learn from it.
What should you remove before pasting a journal into an AI?
Account numbers and personal details. Private details never go into any AI tool.
If you only journal your wins, what can the AI find?
Only a rosy, incomplete picture. It cannot see the losses you left out.
What does a result of +2R mean?
You made twice what you risked. R is the amount you risked on the trade.
News-day trades were -1R, -1R, -1R and +2R. What is the total?
-1R. Three losses of 1 and one win of 2 add up to -1.
Goal of this lesson: Use an AI assistant to tag, summarize and find patterns in your trade journal.
