Summarizing news with AI
AI can shrink a long article to a few lines, but you still need to check when it happened and who said it.

Explained simply
An AI news summary is like a friend telling you about a film in three sentences. You get the main story fast, but they might skip the twist or mix up when things happened. Before you act, you check the original.
The lesson
AI assistants can shrink long reports, results releases and articles into short summaries. Summaries can drop key numbers, mix up dates or miss what the market expected, such as a change in the company's guidance, meaning its own forecast for the coming months. A model may not know about recent events at all unless you give it the text. Always check the date, the original source, the key numbers and whether the news was already expected.
A worked example
Illustrative example: a company's results release says revenue was 1,200 million, up from 1,000 million a year ago, profit was 240 million, and guidance for next year's revenue was cut from 5,000 million to 4,600 million. The AI summary says only: 'Revenue up 20%, profit strong.' The growth checks out: (1,200 - 1,000) x 100 / 1,000 = 20%. But the guidance cut is missing. Guidance fell by 5,000 - 4,600 = 400 million, a cut of 400 x 100 / 5,000 = 8%, and that line may matter more to the market than the headline.
The same idea at four levels
- Beginner. An AI summary turns a long article into a few short lines.
- Foundation. Summaries can skip important details, so always check the original.
- Intermediate. Use the news check: date, source, numbers and expectations.
- Advanced. Prices react to news compared with what was expected, so a summary that says 'revenue up' but drops a lowered guidance line can point you the wrong way.
- Expert. Give the assistant the full original text instead of asking it what happened, ask it to quote the exact line behind each point, and still read the guidance and one-off items yourself.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trading on a summary without checking the original source.
- Forgetting to check whether the news is new or weeks old.
- Reading only the headline number and skipping the guidance and expectations.
