devil's advocate

Someone who argues against your idea on purpose, to help you find its weak spots before it is too late.

The fuller meaning

Arguing the opposite case on purpose to test a decision. The lessons use an AI assistant as devil's advocate: ask for the strongest case against your trade, or what would prove you wrong, with a neutral prompt, because assistants tend to agree with the way a question is framed.
