balance sheet

A company's list of everything it owns and everything it owes, like a snapshot of its savings and its loans.

The fuller meaning

A financial statement of a company's assets, liabilities and shareholders' equity at one date, where assets equal liabilities plus equity. Traders read it for debt and cash: a company with heavy debt and little cash can get into trouble even while it reports a profit.
