CPI

A report that shows how fast everyday prices, like food and rent, are going up.

The fuller meaning

The consumer price index, the main inflation report, published monthly in the US at 8:30 New York time. Markets react to the gap between the actual figure and the forecast; a hotter reading can push central banks toward higher rates. Spreads can widen and prices jump around the release.
