business cycle

The way a country's economy moves through good times and slow times, again and again.

The fuller meaning

The recurring swing of an economy between growth and slowdown or recession. Sectors tend to lead at different stages: cyclical sectors are more sensitive to growth, while defensive ones such as utilities and everyday goods hold up better in slowdowns. The lessons stress these are loose tendencies that often break.
