What people think will happen before news comes out. Prices often move on how the news compares with it.

The fuller meaning

What the market already anticipates, from analysts' estimates to economists' forecasts, and so largely what is already in the price. Results and data move prices through the surprise against expectations, which is why good news can drop a price and bad news lift it.
