Federal Reserve
The main bank of the United States. It sets the basic cost of borrowing money there, which moves markets around the world.
The fuller meaning
The US central bank, which sets short-term interest rates through its Federal Open Market Committee to manage inflation and employment. The FOMC schedules eight meetings a year, about every six weeks; rate decisions, statements and hints about the path ahead move the dollar, bonds and stocks.
