high-impact event
A big scheduled piece of news, like a decision on the cost of borrowing money, that can make prices jump suddenly.
The fuller meaning
A release or decision rated high impact on the economic calendar, such as CPI, the jobs report, central bank decisions or major results. Around it spreads can widen and prices jump, so many traders cut size, skip new trades beforehand or wait for the first reaction to settle.
