When prices of everyday things keep going up, so the same money buys less than before.
The fuller meaning
The rate at which prices rise, measured by reports such as the consumer price index. Central banks set interest rates to manage it: hot inflation can push them toward higher rates, which tends to support the currency and weigh on bonds and growth stocks.
