inventory report

A regular report showing how much of something, like oil, is stored up. Surprises in it can move the price.

The fuller meaning

A scheduled report of commodity stockpiles, such as the US weekly petroleum status report, normally released on Wednesdays at 10:30 New York time. Markets react to the surprise against the forecast: a surprise build in oil inventories tends to weigh on oil prices.
