running total

A number you keep adding to or taking away from as you go, like keeping score in a game.

The fuller meaning

A cumulative sum updated each period. On-Balance Volume is a running total that adds the period's volume when the close is above the previous close and subtracts it when below; only its slope and divergences matter, not its absolute level.
