A group of companies that do the same kind of business, like banks or technology companies.

The fuller meaning

A grouping of companies by business type, such as banks, technology, energy or consumer staples. Stocks in one sector tend to move together, so positions there count as related risk, and sectors lead or lag at different stages of the business cycle.
