shareholders' equity

The part of a company that belongs to its owners: everything it owns minus everything it owes.

The fuller meaning

Assets minus liabilities, the owners' stake on the balance sheet, also called book value; the balance sheet balances as assets = liabilities + shareholders' equity. Debt-to-equity compares borrowing with it, and P/B compares the share price with it per share.
