surprise
The difference between what experts expected and what really happened. Big surprises move prices the most.
The fuller meaning
The gap between an actual result and expectations, such as EPS versus estimates or CPI versus forecast. Because expected news is already priced in, the surprise, together with any change in guidance, is what moves prices on results or data day.
