top-down analysis
Looking at the big picture first, like the economy, then narrowing down to one chart before trading.
The fuller meaning
A checklist that starts with the big picture, rates, the economy and the sector, then the market's own news and calendar, and finally the chart for where and when to act. News shows what could move the market; the chart decides the trade, and when they disagree traders trade smaller or wait.
