depository

A central place that keeps the record of who owns which shares, so shares can be held safely without paper.

The fuller meaning

An institution that holds securities electronically and records transfers of ownership. In India the depositories are NSDL and CDSL, reached through depository participants; in general shares are held through a central depository, and brokers must keep clients' assets separate from their own.
