Extra trading times before the main market day starts and after it ends, when fewer people trade.

The fuller meaning

US trading sessions outside the regular 9:30 to 16:00 New York time session: pre-market and after-hours. Volume is usually thinner and spreads wider, some stocks may have no quotes, and moves there can differ from the main-session open.
