futures contract
A promise made today to buy or sell something later, at a price agreed now.
The fuller meaning
A standardized, exchange-traded agreement to buy or sell an asset, such as an index, a currency or a commodity, at a set price on a future date. Traders post margin, gains and losses are marked to market daily, and each contract expires, so positions must be rolled or settled.
