long position

Buying something because you think its price will go up, planning to sell it later for more.

The fuller meaning

A position that profits when price rises: buying first and selling later. Its stop sits below the entry, usually beyond support, and its target above; a long futures or options position has the same sign logic, and holding it can bring financing costs.
