A company's shares that people buy and sell in a marketplace.

The fuller meaning

Ownership shares of a company traded on an exchange; 'stocks' also means the stock market as an asset class. Stocks gap more than 24/7 markets because news arrives while exchanges are closed, and they settle T+1 in the US and India and T+2 in Japan.
