A list of 500 big US companies whose share prices are combined into one number to show how the US market is doing.
The fuller meaning
The main US large-company stock index. US market-wide circuit breakers are based on its previous close, and the E-mini S&P 500 future, worth 50 dollars per index point, tracks it; index funds and ETFs follow it too.
